A rug is not decoration placed after the furniture. It is part of the room’s geometry. Too small and the seating looks disconnected; too large and it can crowd walls, doors or adjoining zones.
Three living-room rug layouts
1. All furniture legs on the rug
This creates the most grounded, expansive look and works especially well in large formal rooms. The rug should extend beyond the sofa and chairs enough that the group feels intentionally contained.
2. Front legs on the rug
A highly versatile layout for medium rooms. The front legs of sofas and chairs sit on the rug while the rear legs remain on the floor, visually connecting the furniture without requiring an enormous rug.
3. Floating rug inside the group
A smaller rug sits in front of the seating without touching it. This can work in compact rooms but is easiest to get wrong; if the gap is too large, the rug looks like a separate island.

Dining rugs need extra depth
Measure the dining tabletop, then add chair pull-out space on every side. If rear chair legs fall off the rug while someone is seated, the chair can catch at the rug edge each time it moves. A generous dining rug is therefore a functional choice, not only a visual one.
Match shape to the furniture composition
A rectangular rug naturally supports a long sofa or rectangular dining table. Round rugs can work under round tables or in compact conversation zones, while organic rugs suit sculptural seating when the architecture allows.
Do a tape layout before ordering
Mark the rug corners on the floor and photograph the room from the doorway. Check that the rug does not sit awkwardly close to a wall, hearth or cabinet, and that it reaches far enough beneath each important piece.
