Avian Journal • 2026 Buying Guide

A recliner sofa is not simply a deeper sofa with a footrest. It combines upholstery, moving hardware, ergonomics and—in a motorised model—power components. That means the right buying decision depends on the room as much as the seat.

Motorised vs manual recliners

Factor Motorised recliner Manual recliner
Adjustment Progressive positioning at the touch of a button Fixed or limited positions using a lever or body pressure
Power Needs a socket or suitable power solution No electrical connection
Feel Smoother, more controlled movement Simple, mechanical operation
Service Motor, switch and transformer should be serviceable Check frame, hinges and release mechanism

1. Measure the sofa in both positions

The closed dimensions are only half the story. Ask for the total depth when the footrest is fully extended and the back is reclined. Then mark that footprint on the floor at home. A recliner that looks perfectly proportioned in a showroom can block a coffee-table walkway once opened.

2. Check wall clearance

Some mechanisms move the seat forward as the back reclines and can sit relatively close to a wall. Others need much more room behind them. Do not assume a model is a “wall-hugger”; confirm the manufacturer’s required rear clearance and leave a little practical tolerance for skirting, curtains and uneven walls.

3. Plan power before delivery

For motorised seating, decide where the plug will go before the sofa arrives. Avoid loose extension leads crossing a circulation path. If the sofa floats in the middle of the room, discuss a floor box, concealed cable route or rechargeable solution with your electrician and the furniture team.

4. Test comfort for at least a few minutes

Check head support, lumbar support, seat depth and how your knees sit when the footrest is raised. Adjustable headrests are especially useful when the same sofa is used for conversation, television and lounging.

5. Ask the service questions

Before buying, ask who handles a motor or switch fault, whether replacement components can be sourced, what the mechanism warranty covers and whether service can be done at your home. These questions matter more over time than an extra decorative feature.

FAQs

How much space should I leave for a recliner sofa?

Use the model’s fully reclined depth and required rear clearance, not its closed depth. Also preserve a comfortable walkway in front and at the sides.

Is a motorised recliner better than a manual recliner?

Motorised recliners offer finer adjustment and easier operation; manual recliners are mechanically simpler and do not require power. The better choice depends on use, room planning and service preference.

Can a recliner sofa go against a wall?

Only if its mechanism is designed for low wall clearance. Confirm the specific model rather than relying on a general rule.
