Avian Design Journal · Stone and Marble Edit 2026
Luxury stone should be enjoyed, not treated like a museum exhibit. But a polished surface deserves the right cleaning habits—especially in Indian households where coffee, citrus, wine, coloured sauces and turmeric can all appear during normal use.

The first rule: act promptly
Blot a new spill with a clean, soft absorbent cloth. Do not spread liquid across the surface with vigorous scrubbing. Remove loose crumbs or particles first so they cannot scratch the finish. Follow the table supplier's instructions for its exact material and sealing treatment rather than assuming every veined stone behaves identically.
Water rings and daily condensation
Use coasters beneath cold glasses and mats beneath serving dishes. Dry pooled water rather than leaving it sitting around the base of a vase. If a dull mark appears, it may be moisture, a finish issue or etching—each requires different treatment. A normal damp wipe cannot be promised to restore every marked surface.
Wine, coffee and dark liquids
Blot immediately, then clean with a product that the stone supplier specifically approves. On many natural marbles, acidic liquids may etch the polish and pigmented fluids may stain if left standing. Do not reach automatically for vinegar, lemon juice, bleach or an abrasive kitchen scrubber. If a dark mark remains, contact a stone-care professional before applying spot treatments.
What about turmeric, tea and oily food?
Indian entertaining can be demanding on a dining table. Use placemats and serving trays wherever practical. Remove turmeric-rich sauce or oily food carefully and ask the supplier whether the surface requires sealing or a special pH-neutral cleaner. Harsh household degreasers can damage some stone finishes; test no treatment without approval.
Natural marble versus marble-look surfaces
Appearance does not tell you exact performance. The Nero Valora Centre Table is pictured in an elegant staged spill-cleanup scene, but the photograph is not laboratory proof of stain resistance. Similarly, marble-look ceramic or engineered materials may have different care requirements. Ask for the specific material sheet, finish and manufacturer-recommended cleaning method.
The simple weekly routine
Dust with a soft cloth, wipe suitable surfaces with a lightly damp microfibre cloth and dry promptly. Use the recommended stone cleaner when needed, and inspect seams and edges where residue may collect. Lift heavy decorative objects instead of dragging them. Avoid placing hot cookware directly on stone unless the supplier explicitly approves that use.
Buying checklist for practical owners
Before placing an order, ask: Is this natural stone or an engineered surface? Is it sealed? What is the recommended cleaner? Can it be resealed or professionally repolished? What counts as a warranty-covered defect versus routine wear? Clear answers let you select luxury furniture confidently rather than relying on attractive styling imagery.
FAQs
Can every marble stain be wiped off?
