Avian Journal • Living Room Layout 2026
Many living rooms are arranged with one instruction: point everything at the television. That works for movie night, but it can make everyday conversation feel awkward. A conversation-first living room layout treats the TV as one focal point rather than the only focal point.
Bring seats into speaking distance
If sofas and chairs sit around the perimeter of a large room, people may technically face each other while still feeling too far apart. Pull seating inward around a rug and coffee table so conversation happens naturally. The empty circulation zone can then move around the outside of the group.
Face-to-face sofas for formal rooms
Two sofas opposite each other create one of the clearest conversation layouts. It works well in rectangular drawing rooms and can still include a television on a side wall if screen viewing is not the room’s only purpose.
One sofa plus two chairs for flexibility
A sofa with two chairs angled inward is easier to adapt. Chairs can turn toward a television, fireplace, window or another guest. This layout also makes it easier to mix upholstery and introduce a more collected look.
Sectionals can still be social
An L-shaped sofa naturally turns people toward each other at the corner. Add one chair opposite the open side rather than filling the room with another large sofa. The result can support both lounging and conversation.
Products to compare for conversation layouts

Felix (3+2)
Two separate sofa pieces can be placed face-to-face or at a right angle depending on the room and focal point.

Navona 3 Seater
Use a single three-seater as the anchor, then build the social side of the room with separate chairs.
Use the rug as the conversation boundary
A large rug visually tells the eye which seats belong to one group. At minimum, try to connect the front legs of the major seating pieces to the rug. This makes a mixed sofa-and-chair arrangement feel unified.
Do not ignore the TV
Conversation-first does not mean television-free. Consider swivel or movable chairs, or place the TV slightly off the main axis so the room can shift between social use and viewing. The goal is flexibility, not a rigid rule.
FAQs
How far apart should sofas be for conversation?
There is no one universal number because sofa depth and table size vary, but people should be able to speak comfortably without the room feeling like a corridor. Mock up the arrangement before ordering.
Can I put a TV beside rather than opposite the sofa?
Yes, especially in rooms used more for entertaining than long viewing sessions. Check comfortable viewing angles for the seats used most often.
Are swivel chairs useful in a TV room?
They can be, because they allow a seat to turn between conversation and the screen without moving the whole chair.
